New Year, New House: Indoor Edition

Updated: Nov 2, 2020

We bought our house in late February 2020 and have been working on improving it bit by bit. Here's a photo recount of our adventures.

Paint, Floors, Bathroom and Doors

After purchasing the house, we had everything repainted and the floors refinished. We also made some modifications to the main bedroom door and the bathroom.

Kitchen, Pantry, and Mudroom

In the first few months, we upgraded the kitchen sink to accommodate the portable dishwasher we found at Rebuilding Exchange, added Ikea shelving to the pantry, replaced a couple of ceiling fans, pulled the cabinetry above the fridge down, and made the mudroom a more functional workspace.

Upstairs

The ducting wasn't installed properly, so airflow between the two rooms upstairs isn't great. We decided to help things out by installing a vent in the door. We also added some shelves in the cat room / office for Ivan and BC to lounge on, set up a cozy reading nook, and played with the old trains Rachel got from her dad.

Basement Adventures and Things Eartha Bites When Scared

Although the washing machine that came with the house is pretty new, it chewed up its feet when it tried walking across the room during spin cycle. I learned that washing machines are delivered with pins installed to keep the washing bin stable during transport. Turns out they were never removed, and the nice appliance repairperson's visit was quick and easy. The furnace in the house was 27 years old, so we had it replaced, and just in time! Our old furnace died the morning of the new one's installation. The heavy rains in May made us aware of multiple leaks in the foundation. We'll be having French drains installed in the basement this winter to keep things dry. And as the summer storms rolled in, we learned Eartha gets scared and likes to chew on things...like the bathtub faucet, walls, and the baby gate.
